I had often thought about it and was delighted to find the film on Amazon. 84 Charing Cross Road is one of my favorite movies. Hopkins is equally convincing as the reserved British Book Shop Manager and buyer. She instilled such a love of books in me that I still search used bookstore for the adventures of the Melody Family, by Elizabeth Enright; those were the first "real books" I read. I should know.

Seeing it again tonight after so many years caused me to fall in love with it all over again! The story is heartwarming and funny. And yet they become pen-palls, and then real friends. Beautifully acted and crafted, funny and moving, a nostalgic journey into the recent past, and the simple power of communication by letter. It's a very beautiful and moving story, with great characters (Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins are magnificent!) Would highly recommend. She has plans to visit London but something gets in the way.

It starts in 1949 and ends in the late sixties and tells the story of their postal relationship and how it affects the lives of those living and working around the protagonists. When I was only 12 I remember watching Anne Bancroft as Mrs. Robinson in "The Graduate", more specifically her legs in "The Graduate" - Wow! I read the book and I saw the play and now I am reviewing the movie, and I still don't think the basic idea is sound.The story begins in the years right after World War II, when London was still gripped by food rationing and pocked by bomb craters.There is not a lot of drama in this story.

This is a very entertaining film the pairing of Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins is excellent, Bancroft is really in top form as the sassy New York Writer.

I haven't read the book that this film was based on but it's on my list to buy. Mail her friends some meat from another country across the pond. The idea of pen pals across the pond rather than emails, texts, or skyping each other - even though they had telephones; But I liked how the narrative maintained the tradition of writing via post, seems even more romantic for people watching this film in the 21st century. And for that matter, Miss Fiske had a sharp critical intelligence, and I suspect that after seeing this movie she would have nodded and said she enjoyed it, but then she might have added, "Why didn't that silly woman get on the boat and go to London 10 years sooner and save herself all that postage?

It also appealed to me as an avid lover of books and as someone who has always wanted to own a bookshop. Miss Fiske ran the book club and the Saturday morning puppet shows and the book fairs and the story readings.
