I tried booking other Minshuku through fax but had no luck, fortunately the Shirakawago Information Center managed to hold this place for us and we managed to stay here for a night. Welcome to Shirakawa-go No Yu.
No air con was available in the room but it was quite cool during night time, while it could be stuffy at late afternoon.
Also please do not bring any large suitcases as there is not room to store it in the minshuku. The food was plentiful and all excellent. Hot springs have a very long history in Japan, and they are an intimate part of Japanese culture.
It took around 15 mins to get to the onsen place. Didn’t feel cold at all even though it was 2-4 degree outside!
Our hostess spoke english and was so thoughtful offering on the day of our departure to drive us up to the bus terminal as it was raining - this is a car free village, so this was an unexpected kindness. The residents of Shirakawago still live in several small villages.
Owner lady is very lovely! If you want to check out rural Japan, this town is a must.
Great hospitality! The only thing was that you can hear people snore throughout the night and bathroom is shared, but that's part of the experience. Shirakawa go No Yu is the only ryokan with hot spring baths in the Shirakawa-go village. I had been a little bit concerned after saying some of the Gasso Zuckiro houses with their fire pits!
The lady who greeted us in the beginning was kind of scary and seem to have an attitude, but was really friendly at the end when we left. Can’t pick who you share the house with, so please if you are a smoker,This enchanting original gassho style farmhouse was a real experience - paper walls between the rooms and all the ingredients of rural traditional Japanese country life made this an unforgettable experience and one that I would recommend.
It was cozy, clean and comfortable.
The most popular village for visitors is Ogimachi which in 1995 was declared World Cultural and Heritage Site. There are approximately 180 thatched farmhouses, sheds, and barns, and most of them were built about 200-300 years ago.
